Joy of Life
"An orange rose symbolizes enthusiasm and passion. I am very passionate about these several activities that are a part of my life that make me joyful and happy. When I am executing these hobbies of mine, I am very enthusiastic, making the people around me joyous as well."
Figure skating may still be an odd or new sport to many people. With my father and grandfather having interest in ice skating, naturally, I was also fascinated by the sport. When I first stepped on the ice when I was seven years old, I knew that it was the actviity that I wanted to pursue. Without hesitation, for the first time, I told my parents it was really something that I wanted to try out professionally. I began figure skating right away and continued to skate for about five years. At the end of these five years, I believed that becoming a solo skater was not best for me. Then, an opportunity was given to me to be on a synchronized skating team representing the ice skating rink that I was a part of. I was placed on the highest level synchronized skating team immediately, and my team placed first at the Sectional Competition in our level. After this victory, I had the assurance that this team sport in ice skating was perfect for me and I want to continue pursuing this amazing sport.
This is the video of my synchronized skating team (Rose City Crystals) located in Pasadena, California when we earned the title of "Rose City Crystals 2018 Pacific Coast Sectionals Open Juvenile Champions."
This is a dance video of the intermediate dance team that I was on in my freshman year at Crescenta Valley High School in the year 2019.
Dancing is a hobby that I discovered very late in my life. As I had a little experience of dancing through ice skating, I had always had interest in dancing and looked up to many dancers. However, I had never actually tried dancing myself. When I encountered k-pop (korean pop) in about fourth grade, I fell in love with it right away. From this point on, I started learning korean pop dances on my own and developed my skills continuously. Then, before I entered high school, I found out that I could join a dance team at the high school that I was planning on attending. I worked very hard on the audition to be able to participate in the intermediate (show) dance team instead of the beginning team because I had the personal greed to become a better dancer. Through my hard work, I made it to the intermediate dance team and it was one of the best experiences I had because I met a lot of new people and received a lot of love from these students, boosting my confidence. In my sophomore year of high school after my freshman year of being on the intermediate team, I was planning on continuing intermediate, but after the re-audition, my main dance coach told me that she saw talent and that she wanted me to be placed on the competitive dance team. At that moment, I was very grateful and felt that I was being recognized as a worthy person. I hope to continue this ongoing improvement of my dancing and develop into a much more talented dancer.
As soon as I turned three and a half years old, a violin was placed in my tiny hands. It was my parents’ choice of making me play the violin as my main instrument, but as I grew up and continued to play the violin for as long as I can remember, I began to love it more and more. The reason I was told to play the violin was because my parents had always dreamed of playing in an orchestra (as the two of them had only been able to play piano). Therefore, they wanted their daughter to learn an instrument that could perform in an orchestra, and they ended up choosing the violin because they both loved the sound that violin created. Ever since the young age that I began performing this instrument, it allowed me to show my feelings and thoughts through my playing. I performed the violin all throughout elementary, middle, and high school in school orchestras and outside orchestras. This includes Crescenta Valley High School's Symphony Orchestra which is the highest level of music playing offered at the high school I attMy main organization is the Glendale Youth Orchestra, where I even had the opportunity to perform a solo in Vivaldi’s second movement of “Spring.” I hope for many more of these opportunities as I continue on with my journey of violin.
This is the 2020 virtual concert of the Glendale Youth Orchestra. I perform a solo for Vivaldi's second movement of "Spring" at the time stamp 31:51.
As a Korean-American child with both Korean parents and grandparents, I believe it is a necessity for myself to be fluent in Korean. To make sure that I was able to maintain the Korean that I learned from attending a Korean pre-school, I began to view Korean TV shows, dramas, and listening to Korean pop music. Soon, I became very interested in the different aspects of K-culture and not only was I viewing and listening to the dramas, shows, and music for maintaining my fluency, but for my own enjoyment. To this day, I listen to k-pop music, dance to their music, and talk to my family in Korean instead of English.
